Farewell Visit of the Japanese Ambassador

Ljubljana, 01/16/2003  |  press release

Slovenian President Dr Janez Drnovšek today bade farewell to the Japanese ambassador to Slovenia, Akio Ijuin.

At their meeting, President Drnovšek conveyed his recognition of the non-residential ambassador’s work in developing Slovene-Japanese relations during the last three years. It was during his period of service that Princess Sayako paid a visit to Slovenia – the highest-level Japanese visit to Slovenia so far. President Drnovšek expressed his interest in a further deepening of relations; the opening of a Japanese Embassy in Ljubljana could contribute to this. He also spoke in favour of strengthening economic cooperation, which still offered ample opportunity.

During the conversation, Ambassador Ijuin stressed the importance Japan placed on its relations with Slovenia, with which it actively cooperated some years ago as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. In this respect, Japan looks forward to closer mutual relations during the forthcoming Slovene presidency of the OSCE in 2005. In the same year the Japanese Embassy in Ljubljana is expected to be opened. In 2005 Japan will also host the world EXPO, which could provide a good opportunity for a deepening of economic cooperation. Meanwhile, more and more Japanese citizens are discovering Slovenia and its beauties, confirmed by a steady growth in the numbers of Japanese tourists in Slovenia.

At the end of the meeting, President Drnovšek thanked the Japanese Ambassador for his work and wished him much success in his new post.
