In their discussions President Türk and Mr Miller reviewed the progress of the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, both in Slovenia and along the entire route of this great energy project. They welcomed the recent removal of obstacles to its success. President Türk and Mr Miller also touched upon the incorporation of the joint Russian–Slovenian company, which is expected before the end of March, and the further planning of the pipeline route in Slovenia. They took the view that preparations are going well and that every effort should be made to effectively and quickly resolve any future problems.

President Türk and Mr Miller emphasised the strategic importance of natural gas as an environmentally friendly fuel. They also highlighted broader issues concerning cooperation between the European Union and Russia in the field of energy. They agreed that the supply of natural gas is becoming an increasingly important aspect of this cooperation; therefore, this issue will need to be included in the EU–Russia strategic partnership framework. There are opportunities for this, and the experiences gained from the completed Nord Stream project are encouraging, as is the progress being made in the South Stream project preparations. President Türk and Mr Miller also addressed the idea of a high-level conference, to which all the countries involved in the South Stream project would be invited.
