Opening of the general debate of the UN General Assembly – President Pahor also meets with President Rouhani

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, is continuing his working visit to New York, where he is attending the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Yesterday, on the first day of his visit, he participated in the Climate Summit and held a number of bilateral meetings. Late in the evening (local time), he attended the reception hosted by the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelle Obama.

The reception was held for the Heads of Delegations present at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.

On Tuesday, President Pahor met with the President of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Sam Kutesa, the Foreign Minister of Uganda, with whom he discussed climate change, development and other issues which are on the Agenda of the UN General Assembly session. On the margins of the session, President Pahor also had a meeting with his Croatian counterpart, Ivo Josipović. The two presidents touched upon bilateral relations and exchanged their views on the crisis in Ukraine and other international peace and stability issues.

This morning, President Pahor participated in the opening of the general debate of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. At the invitation of Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, he also attended the traditional lunch for Heads of Delegations hosted by Mr Ban Ki-moon.

On the margins of the UN General Assembly session, the President of the Republic of Slovenia continued his bilateral meetings. He had talks with the President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, with whom he discussed the possibility of enhancing cooperation between their two countries. The two presidents exchanged their views on current regional and international issues and undertook to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas in the common interest of both countries and to conclude the required economic cooperation agreements in the shortest possible time. President Pahor welcomed the initiated dialogue on Iran’s nuclear programme and highlighted the importance of this historic moment for the conclusion of a nuclear agreement. The presidents also discussed the situation in Syria and Iraq and other outstanding international issues. At the end of their meeting, President Rouhani invited President Pahor to pay an official visit to Iran.

President Pahor also met with the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski. The two presidents assessed the bilateral relations between the two countries as good and friendly. In their talks, they focused on the crisis in Ukraine and the relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation. They agreed on more regular meetings at the highest level and President Pahor was delighted to receive an invitation to the meeting of the V4 Heads of State to be held in Prague.

President Pahor is also due to meet with the President of the Republic of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolić, and the President of the Arab republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He will conclude his visit to New York on Friday with a speech at the general debate of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
