President Pahor on World Water Day: »Our decisions about sustainable management of groundwater must be informed by the best available knowledge«

Dubai, 22. 3. 2022 | press release, speech

On World Water Day, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, opened the business forum Groundwater – the interplay of science, technical innovation and health by video address. The forum took place in the Slovenian pavillion at EXPO Dubai 2020 and was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia with SPIRIT agency.

Speech of the President of the Republic (Check against delivery!):

Excellences, ladies and gentlemen,

Nothing makes us more vulnerable than not having access to water. Over two billion people across the globe face this situation every day.

When we talk about water, we mostly think about rivers, lakes, or the sea.

However, it is the invisible source – groundwater – that represents the most abundant source of freshwater on the planet.

Yet, this source is under threat from pollution and over-extraction.

To face this challenge, we need science, research, data and innovation. Our decisions about sustainable management of groundwater must be informed by the best available knowledge.

I am certain that today's discussion will provide some answers on how science and technology should interact with policy in order to make groundwater the source of our resilience, sustainable growth, restoration of ecosystems and climate action.

Let us all do our utmost to make this invisible source visible and make it last for many generations to come.
