The President of the Republic of Slovenia discusses the withdrawal of the US from the Iran nuclear deal with the American ambassador

Today, on 9 May 2018, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, received the ambassador of the United States of America, Brent Hartley, for discussions at the Presidential Palace, at the ambassador’s initiative.

The American ambassador, Brent Hartley, presented to President Pahor the reasons for last night’s decision by President Trump related to the withdrawal of the United States of America, one of the signatories, from the Iran nuclear deal.

President Pahor expressed concern at this decision. With regard to the future of control over the Iranian nuclear programme, he has doubts similar to those raised by his European counterparts and senior EU officials. In addition to the withdrawal of the USA from the Paris Climate Agreement and the withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal, there is still the unsolved issue of possible American tariff measures regarding European steel and aluminium. However, he is pleased by the White House's determination to support a peaceful resolution of disputes on the Korean Peninsula.

The President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, and Ambassador Hartley expressed the hope and conviction that the traditional alliance between the European Union and the US would overcome the current test and, in light of mutually beneficial cooperation, would continue for the benefit of world peace and security.
