President of the Republic addresses the mayors of European capitals
Ljubljana, 8.5.2008 | press release
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, today addressed the mayors of the capital cities of the EU Member States and successor states of the former Yugoslavia attending a meeting in Ljubljana. In his address, Dr Türk stressed that capital cities have always had a special status and played a special role. Capital cities are not merely the symbol of an individual country and its legal and political centre. President Türk emphasised their role in the area of combating global warming, where the capital cities of countries have much greater independence as well as responsibility. The majority of greenhouse gas emissions emerge from large cities and most of these cities are capitals, said Dr Türk, highlighting the great importance of the exchange of experience and examples of good practice in this area. At the end of his speech, he congratulated the organisers for dedicating this year’s meeting to this purpose with long-term and global meaning.
