LETTER OF CONDOLENCE TO GORBACHEV

Ljubljana, 20 September 1999

"Your wife Raisa and yourself symbolised the notion of modern Russia to all of us, a Russia that has opened up to the world and, following the fall of the Berlin wall and the end of the block division, wants to set up new relations among people and among countries", read part of President Kucan's letter of condolence dispatched to Mikhail Gorbachev today upon the death of his wife Raisa. In his letter President Kucan also remembered Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev's visit to Slovenia in 1988, at a time when radical social change was expected; a visit that has remained and shall forever stay in the memories of the Slovenian people.
