GORAN SVILANOVIC, PRESIDENT OF THE CIVIL UNION OF SERBIA PAYS VISIT TO PRESIDENT KUCAN

Ljubljana, 9 May 2000

The President of the Republic Milan Kucan today received the President of the Civil Union of Serbia, Mr Goran Svilanovic, who is attending an international conference on the EU an NATO taking place at Brdo near Kranj. The guest informed President Kucan of the current situation in the FRY and in Serbia in particular. The Civil Union of Serbia, part of the united Serb opposition, is endeavouring to ensure democratic elections in Serbia in order for changes to occur democratically. He assesses Slovenia to be the state that has achieved the best results among all transition countries, which is why he is particularly interested in the normalisation of relations between the FRY and Slovenia, both successor states of the former Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. In their opinion the establishment o diplomatic relations between the FRY and Slovenia is urgent in order to be able to start resolving open issues, particularly those relating to property and other rights of citizens and undertakings in both countries. Svilanovic also took this opportunity to hand over to President Kucan his written statement on relations between Slovenia and the FRY.
