President Türk receives UN Secretary-General

President and Secretary-General focused on several issues on the UN agenda and regional security issues in South-East Europe. Concerning the international issues, they agreed on the importance of the UN Security Council’s decisions regarding the situation in Syria, which is threatening international peace and security, and called for a consensus at the UN Security Council on further measures to be taken.

President Türk and Secretary-General Ban also discussed issues concerning preventive diplomacy, human rights and the tasks of the international community in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development after the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio+20. They agreed that the development of an institutional structure within the UN framework, which should ensure the implementation of guidelines adopted in Rio de Janeiro, is of major importance at the moment.

The time has come to review current practices and to determine which indicators, in addition to GDP, can provide assistance to measuring progress and determining appropriate economic and social policies for different states.
