On the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, two representatives of the Zemzem women’s association awarded the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk, the symbol of Srebrenica in memory of the victims of the massacre. The symbol of Srebrenica is a pin in the form of a white flower with eleven white petals symbolising 11 July and innocence, and a green circle symbolising hope and life. Wearing the symbol is a mark of respect for the victims of the massacre, and also a warning that the events which took place at Srebrenica must never be repeated anywhere else. The President of the Republic was an honorary sponsor of events organised by the Zemzem association to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. |
The discussion partners commended the efforts of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, which prepared a photographic exhibition at its premises commemorating the massacre in Srebrenica. The exhibition was viewed by many visitors, including the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, who visited the National Assembly on Tuesday. President Türk advocated the idea that in contacts with Bosnia and Herzegovina respect for the memory of the victims of the massacre in Srebrenica would be consistent, during visits of political delegations as well as on other occasions. He stressed the importance of information and the translation of works into Slovenian which testify to this tragic event. |
In the evening, Barbara Miklič Türk, the wife of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, attended the event organised by the Zemzem association at Prešeren trg square in Ljubljana, where the loss of innocent lives in Srebrenica was symbolically commemorated with a minute’s silence and the release of white balloons. |
