Slovenia and Qatar Strengthen their Cooperation in Providing Humanitarian Aid to Libya
Ljubljana, 21.10.2011 | press release
On the occasion of the September session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Slovenian President Dr Danilo Türk met with the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The two statesmen agreed to cooperate in providing humanitarian aid to Libya, this cooperation to focus on the rehabilitation of disabled persons, victims of the armed conflicts in Mistrata.
Today, the Qatar delegation visited Slovenia to discuss the rehabilitation project with representatives of the University Rehabilitation Institute of the Republic of Slovenian (SOČA) and the Slovenian President’s Office. The two sides agreed to jointly prepare a project aimed at the establishment of a rehabilitation centre for disabled persons in Mistrata, scheduled to be opened in November.
While the Libyan authorities make efforts to set up legitimate and democratic governance and introduce the rule of law, such external humanitarian aid is of the utmost importance. The Republic of Slovenia, which has already thus far provided a limited amount of humanitarian aid to Libya, is thus increasingly taking part in these international efforts.
