Press Reception of the Three Presidents

Dr Danilo Türk, President of the Republic, Mr Janez Janša, Prime Minister, and Mr France Cukjati, President of the National Assembly, held a New Year reception last night for representatives of Slovenia’s press.

In his speech to the numerous journalists gathered, President Türk addressed the autonomy of the press, owner relations in the media and the relationship between power and the media. He underlined that these issues were not new and that Europe had faced them for a long time. The President of the Republic especially stressed the aspect of the responsibility of public officials and of the press, both of which groups serve the public. In his opinion, the responsibility of the press is great, for it covers public expression, accuracy and ethics. “These are the things for which I express respect for your work,” emphasised Dr Türk, wishing the gathered Slovenian journalists a successful year and good cooperation.
